ETH Zurich Students Build The \"World’s First\" Two-Storey Wooden Pavilion Using Robots
Master`s students at the Swiss University ETH Zurich have manufactured and constructed a timber pavilion using robots. Included in their Digital Manufacture class in the School, they produced robotic manufacturing methods with the goal of reducing structure waste. The task was the product of co-operation between the course`s students and professors. The look and construction process needed devote the Gramazio Kohler Research laboratory at the Swiss University ETH Zurich.
At the ETH Zurich: The lattice framework of the pavilion is manufactured from interconnected braced wood, and it`s remaining uncovered from the inside to make screen chairs and a staircase. The demanding part of the task was establishing the robot`s process to the non-standardized products and dimensions. The designers claim that their design may be the world`s first two-storey wooden pavilion built applying robots. \"Timber construction has an extraordinary history of applying CNC manufacturing possibilities, but robotic assembly systems remain very rarely integrated,\" claimed Philipp Eversmann, mind of the Digital Fabrication program in the ETH Zurich.
\"Through automatization methods and progressive feedback processes, the manufacture system was able to reduce product waste by responding to various substance measurements actually throughout the construction process.\" While the bottom floor of the pavilion acts as a getting space or an exhibition space, the utmost effective floor with the top tilted to at least one side works as a statement spot.
The manufacture, screening, and structure of the pavilion took a five-week duration to be accomplished at the ETH Zurich. The developers are positive that their task, that was part of a study on the employment of robots in wood construction, may contribute to the development of robot-fabricated wood figure structures for houses and different large degree projects. Ultimately, the pavilion will be on show at the Zurich Design Biennale in September 2017.
